Bicycle tourism info (Humboldt and Del Norte counties)

New page.  Information still being updated.  This will represent a list of options for shopping, camping, hostel, bike shops, etc.    Anything seen below is an unfinished list at this time.   🙂

Del Norte County – a rural area on the northern CA coast.  Restock opportunities are limited.

(bicycle shop) –

You have one option in Crescent City – Back Country Bicycles found on facebook, or see store website.  1331 Northcrest Drive, 707-465-3995

lodging/camping options –

The southern end of Crescent City will have a few options, if you’re in the mood for a hotel. You’ll see them along the 101 along your route whichever direction you are traveling.

If you can handle KOA camping this can be found near CC.  5 miles north of CC, or about 1 mile north of 199 on/off ramp.  CC Redwoods KOA

7 miles south of CC is Mill Creek Campground, Redwood National and State park property.  5 dollars a night for hiker/biker sites.  Mill Creek is a bit off the 101 call ahead for details, or ask about at visitor centers ( see visitor center links further below).

6 miles north of Orick you’ll find Elk Prairie Campground, found on the same page as the above link.  This is Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.  A wonderful spot along your route! Stock up on supplies before this stop(no stores in the state park).

Crescent City is a largest of  towns compared to Klamath and Orick.  You will find general stores, and other common rural commerce in towns of this size. As well as Woodland Villa and market ( cabins and the market) a few miles north of Klamath – WV on yelp, primary website.  Splurge on fresh local salmon jerky if it’s in season at the market!  The cabins are not cheap.  Just north of Woodland Villa is the Trees of Mystery.

Other camping opportunities exist with access further off the 101 (out of your way), or just pirate style (when you’re in a pinch).

You’ll find two National/State park visitor centers in this region.  One in Crescent City @ 1111 Second Street.  You can also find a state park visitor center within walking distance from the Elk Prairie Campground.  So let’s call it two visitor centers in Del Norte.

Humboldt County –

Another parks visitor center can be found just south of Orick.  Located on beachfront property, check out the deck out back, and relax for a few minutes.  It overlooks the dunes, with the ocean and beaches further in the distance.  This northern Humboldt and southern Del Norte counties area is Elk country.  Be ready for automobiles pulled over on the shoulder taking pictures.

Arcata eco hostel – The Redwood Lily – 15% off to bicycle tourist!

  1. You may be aware of Warm Showers already, but if not…
This is an online community for long-distance bicycle touring where riders and find hosts, and people can sign up to be a host for touring cyclists.
We have a fairly large number of registered folks as hosts here in Humboldt… I’m 1 of 2 in Fortuna…
It’s been great hosting and I’ve been able to help out a fair number of folks this year.
    Check it out! 😀
